Our Favorite Cleaning Products and Tips

As we help sellers prepare to sell, we have discovered (or stumbled upon) some very effective cleaning products and tips.

Let’s start with our favorite cleaning products:

Contra Costa Homes - Prepare To Sell Cleaning

Sprayway Glass Cleaner – this glass cleaner doesn’t have ammonia and doesn’t leave streaks.  Use this to clean your light fixtures as well as your windows.

Zep Professional Strength Stainless Steel Cleaner is great for indoor appliances.   Bar Keepers Friend is nothing short of amazing for stainless BBQs and outdoor appliances to remove BBQ “haze” as well as the weathered look and bring back the shine (this has been husband-tested and approved).   It can also be used to clean brass and copper.

It never fails, you have your carpet professionally cleaned and within days the first spill occurs.  Blue Magic Carpet Stain and Spot Lifter is one of the best stain and spot lifters we have used.

TILELab Grout and Tile Cleaner is one of the few that cleans dirty grout as well as the tile.  Spray the grout and let it sit for a while and then clean the tile.  If the grout is stained instead of dirty, consider recoloring the grout to give it a fresh, new look.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Sponge is terrific for removing scuff marks on light switch and electrical face plates, baseboards, door frames and walls.

Vinegar is an incredibly versatile prepare-to-sell cleaning product (more on this below).

Want to spruce up your leather furniture?  Lexol Leather Cleaner and Conditioner will do the trick.

Our favorite cleaning tips:

If you want to know how to effectively clean just about anything, we found a great resource at HowToCleanThings.com

From brushing your hair to shaving, bathrooms have a lot of hair that can be difficult to clean with a sponge.  Here is the solution:  purchase a pair of cheap nylons at the drugstore and slightly dampen with warm water.  The nylons quickly and effectively “grab” and remove the hair.

Shower heads often look dull due to water stains and calcium deposits.  Fill a strong plastic bag with vinegar and attach it to the shower head with rubber bands.  Leave it overnight and, presto, you have a clean showerhead.

You can also use vinegar to clean the calcium deposits that collect at the base of your faucets.  Soak a rag in undiluted vinegar and lay it around the base of your faucet for up to an hour.  Scrub the area with a soft bristle toothbrush and then rinse well with water.

Marble is not granite so don’t use the same cleansers.  Marble is significantly softer and more delicate so it’s important to use a PH-neutral cleanser (never vinegar or other acidic cleansers).  Just add a bit of ammonia to warm water and buff it dry after cleaning because Marble is very prone to water spots.
